LIAT WAYSBORT

Liat Waysbort is a choreographer, dancer, teacher and artistic mentor. Her work moves between dance, performance and everyday life, often looking for unexpected ways to bring people into an encounter with movement. She is interested in the liminal space; space between the intimate and the theatrical, the personal and the absurd, and in creating work that can exist both within and beyond the traditional theatre.

Liat began her career as a dancer and rehearsal director with Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv. She moved to the Netherlands to pursue her own choreographic practice and completed a Master’s degree in Choreography at Codarts Rotterdam. She was a resident at Dansateliers and created work for companies including Conny Janssen Danst, Dansgroep Amsterdam and The Meekers. In 2012, she was nominated for the Award for Most Promising Choreographer at the Dutch Dance Festival.

Her choreographic work has been presented nationally and internationally at festivals and venues including Springdance (Utrecht), the Dutch Dance Festival (Maastricht), Julidans (Amsterdam), Rencontres Chorégraphiques (Paris) and B.Motion (Bassano del Grappa). From the beginning, Liat has been drawn to bringing dance into different contexts and to finding new relationships with audiences. Her work has therefore appeared not only on stage, but also in clubs, a tea bar in Amsterdam, at TEDx and in other unexpected settings.

In 2015, Liat founded Bitter Sweet Dance, the foundation supporting the development and production of her choreographic work. Through Bitter Sweet Dance, she creates performances that play with form, perspective and the conventions of dance, while making room for humour, vulnerability and human connection. Her works include Please Me Please – The Solo, Please Me Please – The Duet, Titanic, Gioia Live and My Life in Excel. Her work is supported through national and international partnerships and funding, and continues to develop through collaborations with artists, performers and organisations in the Netherlands and abroad.

Alongside her choreographic practice, Liat has a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring. She is a faculty teacher and coach within Expanded Contemporary Dance at the Theatre Academy Amsterdam. Liat teaches regularly at Scapino dance company. As a teacher and coach, she works closely with dancers and makers to help them discover and strengthen their own artistic voice, while expanding their physical awareness, curiosity and creative possibilities.

Her work explores the space between strength and vulnerability. Using the body as a language to express feelings, memories, discomfort, desire, and contradiction.

Liat's sense of humor allows her to approach personal and sometimes difficult subjects with a sense of play, while the body reveals what lies underneath. It can be awkward, tender, absurd, and deeply honest.
